A few of us were standing outside the Town Office after a Planning Board meeting, shooting the breeze. It was clear and still; the stars were bright and the coyotes were singing very loudly. When I was in college I took an elective "Introduction to Conservation Law Enforcement" with Bill Allen. I wrote my term paper on coyotes. I also aced the "Shoot, Don't Shoot" portion of the class. I didn't take the course because I wanted to be a game warden; I took it because my then boyfriend was also taking the class. He eventually went on to become an undercover agent with U.S. F&W.

One of our stock car racing friends came over yesterday to shovel off the porch roof. For those of you familiar with Wiscasset Speedway and Unity Raceway, you'd know him as "The Cowboy," Dan Trask. We made sure that Owen the opossum has a hole to crawl out from under the porch.

It's been a bit on the downright cold side. When I was a kid we lived in an old poorly insulated farmhouse with single-pane windows that you could feel the draft through. Of course the windows had plastic placed over them, and a banking of hay around the cellar walls helped. There was virtually no heat in the upstairs bedrooms. But we also raised German Shepherds, so at night I always took one to bed with me so I had a warm body to cuddle up with.

I was driving back from Waterville and when I hit the Plantation I noticed a few Fairfield fire/rescue trucks heading in the opposite direction. I thought to myself, "This can't be good." When I got home I found out about the Amish Market. Many thanks to the firefighters and rescue personnel. The building is a total loss. They had just reopened on Monday the 17th after being closed for two weeks for winter inventory.

I received a lovely note and an article about opossums from a reader in Freedom. I also had a reader stop me in the store to talk about 'possums. It seems "Owen" now has a cult following.

Watching the snow come down and the birds hurriedly feeding. I bought the squirrels a corn block and the turkeys have discovered it; it keeps the cats entertained from their inside perches.

I have most of my Christmas ready, with the exception of the baking and fudge and no-bake cookies. It's not Christmas until I deliver Tim Ferreira his peanut butter no-bakes! I'll be taking next week off from the column so I wanted to make sure I wished all my readers a very happy holiday!

I spent a lot of time in the kitchen cooking with my mother; I have committed most of her recipes to memory, but I wish I had them written down by her hand. She had beautiful penmanship. For my eldest niece's Christmas gift I have been writing down family favorite recipes on index cards and laminating them.

I finally got a picture of my 'possum friend Owen after he finished his meal of leftover meatloaf. As I write this, he has a plate of Thanksgiving leftovers waiting for him.
